Stour Environmental Credits unveils more flexible purchasing after developer feedback

Published: 26/02/2026

Following feedback from developers, Stour Environmental Credits has changed the way developers can buy nutrient credits, making the process more flexible and cost‑effective.

From this month, nutrient credits will now be available in 0.01kg blocks, a substantial reduction from the previous minimum of 0.1kg. This means developers can now purchase only what they actually need for each project, rather than paying for extra credits they won’t use. This change could potentially save up to £3,361 per development.

As well as the monetary savings, lowering the minimum credit purchase is expected to help all kinds of developments, especially smaller ones that only need a small amount of nutrient mitigation. By aligning credit sizes more closely with the specific needs of each project, Stour Environmental Credits aims to streamline the development process while continuing to protect the River Stour’s natural environment.

What are nutrient credits?

Nutrient credits help support new development while protecting the health of local rivers and wetlands. They’re created through environmental projects — like septic tank upgrades, wetland creation, or improved land management — that reduce nutrient pollution. Developers can buy these credits to meet their nutrient neutrality obligations through the planning system.

This system, called nutrient neutrality, allows new homes and infrastructure to progress while also protecting sensitive natural habitats.

A spokesperson for Stour Environmental Credits said: “Developers consistently told us that the previous minimum purchase threshold sometimes resulted in buying more credits than were needed. We listened carefully and have acted to make the process more flexible, more proportionate and more supportive of viable development. Although the change will deliver cost savings, our primary focus was responding to user feedback and improving the customer experience.”
